Easton Press: JOHN QUINCY ADAMS: 6th PRESIDENT: MASSACHUSETTS: 2 VOLS: BEMIS

Description: Easton Press leather edition of Samuel Flagg Bemis's "John Quincy Adams: And the Foundations of American Foreign Policy," Volume 1 and "John Quincy Adams and the Union," Volume 2, COLLECTOR'S editions, two of the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1987. Bound in brown leather, the books have decorative paper end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. John Quincy Adams, who lived from 1767-1848, was the son of JOHN and ABIGAIL Adams, and was the first son to succeed his father as President of the U. S. JQA was a central figure in the transition of the United States from a fragile ex-colony to a major world player. One of the greatest diplomats in American history, he won great territorial concessions from the major European powers. JQA accompanied his father, JOHN ADAMS, to Europe where he learned French, Dutch, and Russian. His language skills greatly aided him in dealing with the Europeans. Later he had a strong hand in formation of the MONROE DOCTRINE. Educated at HARVARD, he was elected a Congressman from Massachusetts, a U.S. Senator, and important diplomat before becoming President. He also spent time as a HARVARD Professor, a lawyer, a scientist, and various agrarian pursuits. He served as JAMES MONROE's Secretary of State. By the time he ran for President in 1824, JQA was a well-rounded and remarkably accomplished statesman. His life story parallels the story of a young nation struggling to stand securely on its own feet, and his character is emblematic of both the insecurities and courage, the uncertainty and faith, and the moments of weakness countered by unwavering inner strength that mark the emergence of the United States. After leaving the White House, he enjoyed a long and fruitful career in the House of Representatives. Adams' Presidency was born in frustration. He had not received a majority of the popular vote. Instead, he was elected in a three-way runoff in the House of Representatives. When he immediately named one of his opponents, HENRY CLAY, to his cabinet, an outcry erupted around him. Volume one has 588 pages and an Index and Volume 2 has 546 pages, including Sources and an Index. I offer Combined shipping.
