Description: SIMEON SMITH was one of Ashford’s representatives in the General Assembly and a selectman. At one point, the town provided Smith with a list that to take to the Assembly that would oppose any assumption of power not expressly vested in them in the Articles of Confederation, pay particular attention to the regulation and encouragement of commerce, arts and manufactures, among a number of others, all aimed at guaranteeing the town’s independence. Offering a single page, 8 ¼ x 13 ¼, document signed by Smith as the town’s selectmen providing for the “Return of Provisions & Cloathing [sic] collected on the 2/6 Tax in the Town of Ashford,” listing beef, pork and flour and including a “Pay Table Office, Dec. 30, 1785, Rec’d from the Comtee of Pay Table, full payment for the above Sum of Seven hundred & fifty pounds, four shillings, Lawful money by a charge of said sum in accot with the State this day...” Verso states, “Ashford Select Man Return on the 2/6 Tax, Dec. 30th, 1785.” Includes docketing.
