Description: E. PHILLIPS OPPENHEIM MR. GREX OF MONTE CARLO A.L. BURT Co; no date except copyright 1915 (by Little, Brown). Clearly a very early reprint edition. CONDITION: GOOD... No jacket, definite shelfwear, but well bound. Old price mark in pencil on front flyleaf. Note: This copy (see photograph) has a light brown cover. (I have another copy of this title in my own bookshelves; but it has a green cover; it looks very similar, though a bit thinner. Anyone know anything about these early Burt editions?) From Wiki: Mr. Grex of Monte Carlo is a 1915 spy novel by the British writer E. Phillips Oppenheim. The action takes place in Monaco, a favourite setting in the author's novels. Oppenheim was a pioneer of the modern spy genre, often giving his works a glamorous international setting. Although published in 1915, it was likely to have been written in 1914 Commentaries on line: Who is Mr. Grex and what's the story with his daughter and the sinister bevy of men he's meeting with? This story of Sir Hunterleys, visiting Monte Carlo on some undefined business, takes us into a world portending war, and some of the intrigue must have been going on in 1915. And what's the story with Hunterleys' wife; why are they estranged and why is she spending time with an invalid friend and her horrible husband. This is a nifty mystery with many twists and turns which makes for a great, rainy weekend sojourn to southern France. Give it a try! Mr Grex of Monte Carlo is probably as good a choice as any if you want to sample the work of E Phillip Oppenheim, a prolific British writer of thrillers a hundred years ago. He captures the glamour of the smart set in Monaco, dining and gambling by night and enjoying languid days sleeping or sailing on luxury yachts. The pace is slow and it helps to know something about the tensions in pre WW1 European diplomacy, but the book has a quaint charm, a sympathetic hero and enough action to keep the pages turning. Incredibly well written romantic spy novel from the pre-war, that is World War One era. It includes all of the glamour of European royalty combined with that of Monte Carlo and the Riviera. It is also remarkably prescient in light of subsequent events. It also features the best aspects of the British and American characters on display. Oppenheim was Incredibly prolific for many years but this has to be one of his best. _____________________ {I'll always combine shipping costs and refund any excess shipping charges for multiple-copy book orders.}For all "buy it now" items, you may want to use ADD TO CART if you plan to order more than one item at the same time.______________ WOW!
