He here recounts his time traveling and studying the Inca remains in Peru. He conducts a comprehensive investigation of the Incas, including their history, customs, structures, and people. This work includes hundreds of wonderful engraved illustrations. In 1860 Squier became editor-in-chief of Frank Leslie's publishing house, supervising the first two volumes of Leslie's Pictorial history of the Civil War. He was also first president of the Anthropological Institute of New York.
