"Wisely retreating from the goofy humor of their debut, 1980s Cognac and Bologna (several of the songs are still funny, particularly the opening "Dangerous?," they're just less silly), Doug & the Slugs also toughen up their sound a little bit on 1981's Wrap It! Produced by Bryan Adams collaborator Jim Vallance, who plays up the Slugs' bar band strengths while minimizing the cutesiness that plagued the earlier album, this is a catchier album with stronger songs. Some tunes, like the martially-tinged "Wrong Kind of Right," are slightly gimmicky, but the R&B-edged songs are melodic and well-played, and the more serious songs, particularly the outstanding, Springsteenish ballad "Partly From Pressure," show a more interesting side to the group. Doug and the Slugs are still basically a second-tier act, more or less a slightly harder-edged version of Huey Lewis and the News (with all the good and bad implied therein), but Wrap It! shows that they're much more than the goofy bandwagon jumpers that Cognac and Bologna suggested they might be. Ironically, the tongue-in-cheek liner notes self-mockingly claim that the group sold out in making this record.
