DIY 4x5 Wetplate Holder Insert for Graflex 1234: New Design (Film Pack Adapter)

This film pack adapter insert is my own original design that improves upon this style of plate holder insert. It holds the plates more firmly without causing any bends in thin trophy aluminum like the 4-corner style holders with inserts can, and it produces a nice clean border on the image if you keep the holder clean. It also prevents corrosion of the metal holder due to the continuous lip. There’s a finger groove to help you guide the plates gently in and out with a gloved finger. I can use this holder entirely one-handed in a small portable darkbox. I’ve gone through many iterations over the past five years tweaking it to arrive at this ultimate design that is sturdy and fits EVERY film pack adapter I’ve tried. I have shot hundreds of plates with the same insert, and I have over 50 friends using my improved insert that love it. This is made of black PETG to be chemical and heat resistant. PLA will deform in a hot car. ABS does not do well with ether and alcohol. Black ensures you have no internal reflection issues when using clear glass. I am usually at the John Coffer Jamboree and can hand deliver there, too. This takes full 4x5” plates, unlike Chamonix, so you can get cheaper plates from Main Trophy or Bostick and Sullivan without cutting them custom. If you cut your own glass plates, there’s some extra room to account for any imperfections in your cuts. I use these for wet plate collodion as well as J Lane Dry Plates. I keep a few J Lane plates in for weeks at a time with no light leaks.
