Their name suggests a country Southern rock band in a similar vein as Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Wet Willie but their signature sound is more liberal than that with dollops of rock and jazz and of course, they are entirely instrumental. In actual fact they’re probably more aligned with such virtuosos as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and early Santana in the sense that their music is technically domineering and requires a pair of attentive ears on behalf of the listener. For those who do enjoy instrumental rock, the Dixie Dregs at their finest are utterly sublime. The Dixie Dregs emerged out of a band called Dixie Grit that formed in 1970 in Augusta, Georgia by Steve Morse and Andy West. The band recruited Steve's brother Dave Morse on drums, Frank Brittingham on guitars and vocals and Johnny Carr on keyboards who was soon replaced by Mark Parrish. As a consequence of Steve Morse’s enrolment at the University of Miami’s School of Music in 1971, Dixie Grit disbanded. Morse and West (who studied at Georgia State University), however, continued to perform together as a duo under the moniker, Dixie Dregs. Throughout the early '70s they hooked up with other musicians, mostly gigging during summer breaks and whenever they had time to meet up in Miami or Georgia. They performed as opening acts or special guests at various local gigs and dubbed themselves the Dixie Dregs.
