Description: Antique Derby Bisque Earth Element Figural Group Derby used the bisque format to preserve the most minute details. This piece displays an extraordinary level of skill required to assemble the whole figure from the dozens of molded clay pieces that needed to be put together before firing in the kiln (in the early days they called this process “repairing”). The 4 elements, Air, Fire, Earth and Water were a decorative staple in the early years of porcelain manufacture. This figure has many symbolic references to earth: the missing shovel and rake with vegetables to base, the garland of flowers as well as the basket of fruit. All are composed upon a rocky mound with applied flowers and leaves. The large tree displays a mass of wonderful individual leaves, each molded with minute veins. Underside marked with incised crown, crossed batons as well as No. 48. Approx 8"H X 4"W. I also have the "Air" figure available. Purchased in the UK.
