Denmark Poster Stamp - NEFA Bicycle Lights & Batteries - Mærkat # 1127 - c.1942

Description: [zipedit] DenmarkAdvertising Poster Stamp Mærkat-style poster stamp advertising bicycle lights and batteries manufactured by NEFA (Nordisk Element Fabrik). According to the website for the Danish Technical Museum, at danskeopfindelser.dk: NEFA - Nordisk Element Fabrik was the leading Danish bicycle light manufacturer for more than 50 years. The factory was founded in 1922. The production consisted of smaller batteries, so-called dry elements, and thus also bicycle lights. The batteries and bicycle lights were a good business model. The company remembered to encourage customers to buy NEFA batteries once the old ones were used up. In some cases, they even made special batteries that had to be screwed into the bicycle light. In return for their forced loyalty, customers got bicycle lights at a cheap price. The NEFA lamps were cheap throughout their life. Eg. cost them DKK 1.60 in 1922; about half of what the competing brand Hellesen sold their lights for. Throughout the 1920s and up into the 1930s, NEFA experimented with a variety of lamps. With NEFA Petitte and NEFA 32, a couple of very stable lights were found so far, which were widely used. During World War II, people ran into raw material problems, and fabricated lamps of thin, bad metal. At the same time, the lights also found another use: for marking runways, where the English planes were to throw weapons at the Danish resistance movement. After the war, this lantern was developed, NEFA EX. It was completed around 1949, and the patent was issued in 1952. The special thing about the lamp was the way the glass was screwed onto the battery housing. Now the spring holding the bulb was put together with the glass. Thus, there was less risk of losing the bulb or spring when changing the battery. NEFA EX became the company's biggest success. The bicycle light was in production until 1981, ie more than 30 years. It became known as the "NEFA aperture" - probably an ironic commentary on the modest brightness. The light was e.g. too weak for the British authorities to approve the lamp. In return for the dim light, you got a very stable lamp, which rarely broke. It was gradually also used for purposes other than to light up the Danish cycle paths. Eg. the factory also sold the lantern in different colors so that they could be used as decorations for festive occasions. NEFA suffered a crack in the 1960s, when the factory in Vermlandsgade burned to the ground. Thereafter, the company changed owners and manufacturing was resumed elsewhere. In 1981, production of the small NEFA-EX was stopped. The replacement was a somewhat more solid, square lamp. During the 1980s, NEFA was acquired by the bicycle lock factory BASTA. They continued both the production of the NEFA lamp, and a slightly modified version under the company's own name. The heavy and clumsy lights that used large amounts of battery to keep the incandescent bulbs lit gradually disappeared with the advent of LED lights in the 2000s. Today, the NEFA aperture is a rare sight on the Danish cycle paths. Article authored by: Jakob Caspersen This stamp depicts two of the company's products on bicycles. It is Mærkat # 1127, published c1942 by F.E. Bording A/S, and it is listed in Chr. Søndergaard’s ”Mærkater – Indr. Varemærke”, Vol. 1, on page 31. This example is F/VF, no gum. Approximate Image Size: 30 x 50 mm. * STOCK IMAGE DUE TO RECENT NON-DELIVERY CLAIMS - EXTRA FEES FOR SHIPPING MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME ADDRESSES. Please inquire if you have any questions. Any lot with tracking WILL include details of contents and value for customs purposes. After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
