Description: [zipedit] DenmarkFundraising Poster Stamp Issued by Bagsværd Asyl., a private children's shelter in the København suburbs, this stamp was sold for 2 øre each as a fundraising vehicle. According to Wikipedia: Bagsværd is a middle-class suburb approximately 12 km northwest of central Copenhagen, in the Gladsaxe Municipality. According to the website for the Gladsaxe Kommune, at www.gladsaxe.dk: Bagsværd was the first parish in the municipality to house an actual working class. These people still worked primarily on the farms, not necessarily with agriculture but often with gravel digging, which became a major occupation in Bagsværd. In working-class families, it was often necessary for both husband and wife to go to work, but what did you do with the children in the meantime? Mrs. Johanne Marie Madsen, who was married to the owner of Bakkegård in Bagsværd, took the initiative to establish the municipality's very first kindergarten / nursery. The place came to be called Bagsværd Asyl. The board of the asylum set out to raise money for the new asylum. It cost DKK 700 to build a house that could be used. In return, the board escaped to buy an expensive plot of land, because Mrs. Madsen's husband gave a lot of his land for the construction. Bagsværd Asyl was completed on 10 / 10-1861, and was inaugurated on the 18th of the same month. There were between 14 and 20 children in the asylum. It officially cost 25 øre per day, per child. But the asylum board knew full well that few parents could afford to pay, so instead of sending a bill, the board set up a collection box in the kitchen, and the parents put money in, if they had any. There was no control over the payment, and the vast majority of the money for the operation was collected from the area's wealthy farmers and homeowners. The children in the asylum were cared for by an asylum mother. They had tables and chairs, and when they needed to sleep, they could lie on a couch with woolen blankets over them. But it was not until 1866 that a few toys and blackboards were donated. Bagsværd Asylum was taken over by the municipality in 1935, ie the municipality took over the obsolete building. The kindergarten itself was closed by the health authorities as early as 1930. What the mothers did in the relatively long number of years before a municipal kindergarten came to Bagsværd in 1948, one can only guess. This stamp features a photograph of some of the Bahsværd Asyl children, and it was printed in sheets of 10 stamps (2x5) with full margins all around. It is listed in A. Hartvigsen's "Illustreret Katalog 1885-1920 over Jule-, Velgørenheds- og Foreningsmærker samt Udstillings- og Lejlighedsmærker fra Danmark, Island, Dansk Vestindien, Sønderjylland, Norge, Sverige og Finland" as 1913 #7. The stamp was issued on June 23, 1913, during the annual Midsommerfest celebration in Bagsværd. This example is F/VF, OG, LH. Approximate Image Size: 40 x 28 mm. * STOCK IMAGE DUE TO RECENT NON-DELIVERY CLAIMS - EXTRA FEES FOR SHIPPING MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME ADDRESSES. Please inquire if you have any questions. After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
