The 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), commonly referred to as Delta Force, Combat Applications Group/"CAG", "The Unit", Army Compartmented Element, or within JSOC as Task Force Green,[2] is an elite Special Mission Unit of the United States Army, under operational control of the Joint Special Operations Command. It is used for hostage rescue and counterterrorism, as well as direct action and reconnaissance against high-value targets. Delta Force and its U.S. Navy counterpart, DEVGRU "SEAL Team 6", are the United States military's primary counter-terrorism units and fall under the operational control of the Joint Special Operations Command. Delta Force and DEVGRU perform many of the most highly complex and dangerous missions in the U.S. military, often highly classified as well. These units are also often referred to as special mission units by the U.S. government. Most Delta operators come from the United States Army Special Operations Command's elite 75th Ranger Regiment and Special Forces Groups as well as from the special operations units of other branches of the military, though also occasionally from conventional forces. (REF: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Force)Organization and StructureThe unit is under the organization of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), but is controlled by the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). Command of 1st SFOD-D is a colonel's billet. Virtually all information about the unit is highly classified and details about specific missions or operations generally are not available publicly. The unit is headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.Delta Force's structure is similar to the British 22 SAS Regiment, which inspired Delta's formation. In Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda, Army Times staff writer Sean Naylor describes Delta as having, at the time, nearly 1,000 soldiers, of whom about 250 to 300 are trained to conduct direct action and hostage rescue operations. The rest are combat support and service support personnel who are among the very best in their fields.[22]Naylor further details Delta Force's structure in his book Relentless Strike: The Secret History of Joint Special Operations Command. He describes a few formations in Delta, primarily the following operational squadrons:A Squadron (Assault)B Squadron (Assault)C Squadron (Assault)D Squadron (Assault)E Squadron (Aviation)[23]G Squadron (Advanced Force Operations (AFO), formerly known as Operational Support Troop (OST))[24]Combat Support SquadronSignal SquadronA, B, C, and D Squadrons are saber squadrons (assault). C Squadron was activated in 1990 and D Squadron in 2006. Combat Support Squadron was activated in 2005. E Squadron was activated in 1989 and is stationed separately in Fort Eustis, Virginia. Its cover name is Flight Concepts Division and its predecessor was called SeaSpray.Within each squadron there are three troops: two assault troops for direct action, and a reconnaissance and surveillance troop for penetrating enemy lines unseen, watching enemy positions, and sniping.[22] Each squadron is commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel (O-5)[25] and troops are led by Majors (O-4).[26] Each troop has four teams, each one led by a team leader, a Master Sergeant (E-8) or Sergeant First Class (E-7), and an assistant team leader who can also have the same rank. Each team can have as many as twelve, or as few as one or two operators.[27](REF: Wikipedia) Army 'Combined Applications Group'The uncontested number one heavy-weight champ. The operators of operators, crème de la crème — even the SEALs who killed bin Laden wish they were a part of this crew. Combined Applications Group is their old name, some call them Delta, but that was never an official name either. These guys are the absolute tip of the spear — Matt Bissonnette, one of the SEALs on the bin Laden raid, mentioned them in his book "No Easy Day" as if they were gods. They are also the only group of special operators outside of SEAL Team 6 (ST6) where direct close contact with the enemy is a guarantee upon acceptance, regardless of whether America is officially at war or not. They recruit from the nation's highest special operations units, only twice a year, to include ST6. These are just a couple initial tests they have to pass: A timed 18-mile 'ruck-march' at night in which the candidate must carry 35 pounds in their rucksack.A timed 40 mile route while carrying a 45 pound ruck sack over rough, steep terrain. Then they have a rigorous battery of psychological tests. If, after those tests, they're found to qualify, they attend a six-month training course. If they pass the course, they cease to exist. It's said they work hand-in-hand with the nation's highest paramilitary and intelligence agencies.(REF: http://www.businessinsider.com/most-elite-special-forces-in-the-us-2017-1/#r-force-combat-controllers-5) NOTE: Never personally given any of the coins.
