Description: In an award in the Civil Aeronautics Board's Great Lakes - Southeast Case, Air Mail Route 54 was extended from Cincinnati, Ohio to Detroit, Mich., via Dayton and Toledo, Ohio. Service was inaugurated on January 1, 1959 by two separate flights, one operating from Cincinnati nonstop to Detroit and return; and a second later flight to Dayton where it terminated. The Post Office Department provided map-type official cachets (inscribed “AM-8” in line with current policy of designating all routes flown by an airline by the lowest route number operated by that line) at all points. This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 54 flight from Dayton, Ohio to Miami, Florida (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 54S28.
