The Shaker connection with the early Kirtland Mormons was both dramatic and intense. Joseph Smith probably entertained hopes of converting Shakers when Leman Copley, a Shaker convert to Mormonism, allowed the Colesville congregation of Saints (who had emigrated to Ohio from south central New York State) to settle on his extensive property in Thompson, sixteen miles northeast of Kirtland, and practice a communitarian lifestyle there.
