Measures ~10 ¾” x 14”. In 1963, as a part of the celebration of the emancipation centennial, Afro-Am Publishing released published “Great Negroes: Past and Present” written by Russell L. Adams and edited by David P. Ross. The book was an immediate success and became a pioneer supplementary text for Black Studies programs. The book features more than 170 historically organized biographies of African Americans famous in the fields of education, science, music, and more are offered in this compelling collection. About Eugene Winslow (1919-2001) and Afro-Am Publishing Company, Inc.The illustrator, Eugene Winslow, was a pioneering Black artist, entrepreneur, and Tuskegee airman owned/founded the publishing company, Afro-Am Publishing Co. He graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology and crafted his career as a commercial artist to promote the ideal of racial integration—in image and in business. Though embittered at his experience as the sole African American at the IMPAC design firm, Winslow remained committed to graphic design as a tool to realize African Americans' civic membership in the United States. In 2000, the DuSable Museum of African-American History honored him as one of seven black design pioneers in Chicago.
