Description: Keyes, Daniel. FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. New York, NY: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., 1966. 1st edition. With “First edition” printed on the copyright page, which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: There were a number of later printings of FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON that were published in this exact hardcover format and also in similar, but slightly different, formats. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Daniel Keyes was born in New York, New York in 1927 and he died in Boca Raton, Florida in 2014. He attended New York University briefly before joining the United States Maritime Service at age 17, working as a ship’s purser on oil tankers. After his service he received a B.A. in psychology from Brooklyn College. After his graduation Keyes joined publisher Martin Goodman’s magazine company, Magazine Management. Eventually he became an editor of their pulp magazine Marvel Science Stories and also began writing for Atlas Comics, the 1950’s precursors of Marvel Comics. After Goodman ceased publishing pulps in favor of paperback books and men’s adventure magazines, Keyes became an associate editor of Atlas under editor-in-chief and art director Stan Lee, who was, of course, the famous comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer and who was Marvel’s primary creative leader for two decades. Lee became famous for his help in creating the famous comic book characters Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, and other famous Marvel characters. One story idea that Kaye wrote but did not submit to Lee was called “Brainstorm”, the paragraph-long synopsis that would evolve into FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. It begins “The first guy in the test to raise the I.Q. from a low normal 90 to genius level . . . He goes through the experience and then is thrown back to what was.” Keyes recalled, “something told me it should be more than a comic book script.” The short story and subsequent novel, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON, is written as progress reports of a mentally disabled man, Charlie, who undergoes experimental surgery and beefy becomes a genius before the effects tragically wear off. The story was initially published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and the expanded novel in 1966. The novel has been adapted several times for other media, most prominently as the 1968 film “Charley,” starring Cliff Robertson (who won an Academy Award for Best Actor) and Claire Bloom. Keyes also won the Hugo Award in in 1959 for the shorter version of the story and the Nebula Award in 1966 for the novel. Later Keyes taught creative writing at Wayne State University, and in 1966 he became an English and Creative Writing Professor at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, where he was honored as a professor emeritus in 2000. Keyes was the author of such excellent novels as FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON (offered here), THE TOUCH, THE FIFTH SALLY, THE MINDS OF BILLY MILLIGAN, UNVEILING CLAUDIA, and several others. Some of the awards and award nominations that Daniel Keyes has been honored with: 1960: “Flowers for Algernon.” Hugo Award winner for Best Short Fiction 1967: FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. Hugo Award nominee for Best Novel. 1967: FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. Nebula Award co- winner for Best Novel. 1968: “Charly.” The film Charly, based on the novel FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON, is met with critical success. The actor Cliff Robertson won an Academy Award for Best Actor in the film. Robertson was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. 1969: “Charly.” Hugo Award nominee for Best Dramatic Presentation. 1986: THE MINDS OF BILLY MILLIGAN. Kurd Lasswitz Preis winner for Best Foreign Novel. 1993: THE MINDS OF BILLY MILLIGAN. Seiun Award winner for Best Nonfiction. 2000: Daniel Keyes is honored by being named an Author Emeritus by the Science Fiction Writers of America for Works and Contributions to Science Fiction. 2001: ALGERNON, CHARLIE AND I. Locus Award 3rd-place winner for Best Nonfiction. Clearly Daniel Keyes contributions to science fiction, especially with his novel FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON, are historically very important, both in terms of the publication of the novel and in terms of the film that was based on the novel. And 1st editions of FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON are quite scarce From the dust jacket flap: “ . . . Daniel Keyes . . . Flowers for Algernon . . . Until he was thirty-two, Brooklyn-born Charlie Gordon — gentle, amiable, oddly engaging — had lived in a kind of mental twilight. He knew that knowledge itself was important, and he had learned to read and write after a fashion; but he also knew that he wasn’t nearly so bright as all the people around him. There was even a white mouse named Algernon who in some ways was brighter than Charlie . . . But an extraordinary operation had been performed upon Algernon. Algernon was now a very special mouse, a downright genius among mice . . . Suppose Charlie underwent a similar operation . . . So begins Daniel Keyes’s strikingly original first novel. Won by Charlie from the start, the reader follows his great adventure with rapt attention, high hope, a mounting sense of triumph. And, yet, beneath the surface, there is dread. The experiment may be too daring. Unpredictable dangers may lie ahead for Charlie and Algernon . . . In other versions, as widely anthologized story and as a noteworthy television drama, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON has fascinated millions. In this full-bodied, richly populated novel, its appeal is stronger than ever . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . Daniel Keyes . . . was born in Brooklyn, New York, and received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Brooklyn College. He has been a merchant seaman, ship’s purser, fiction editor, and high-school teacher, and is at present on the English faculty at Wayne State University , in Detroit, Michigan. He is married and the father of two children . . . FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON has had a remarkable career in various media. As a television drama it won an Emmy nomination for Cliff Robertson, who played the central character. Soon it will appear as a motion picture, again starring Mr. Robertson. As a short story is has appeared in nearly twenty collections, and has been translated into Italian, French, German, and Japanese. And now’s a novel it seems destined for a permanent place in contemporary fiction . . . “ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in a VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its medium gray-colored full-cloth binding with blue lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct orange endpapers. The book has a touch of wear at the lower spine cloth edge and a touch of wear at the lower front corners; basically unobtrusive. Overall, the book is in excellent condition; much better than is usually encountered. The dust jacket is the correct 1st state with the publisher's price of $4.95 on the upper right corner of the front flap, which is important in that later printings of the dust jackets look exactly like the 1st printing except that the prices on those dust jackets are higher than $4.95. The largely white dust jacket shows no tanning (unusual thus) and very little rubbing. The dust jacket has undergone some slight archival restoration (using non-acidic materials), mainly at the spine edges and at the flap fold edges, that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist, that includes a small amount of color touch-up. The famous and fantastic dust jacket artwork is by the excellent artist Carl Smith. There is a wonderful contemporary photograph of Daniel Keyes on the rear flap of the dust jacket. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT BOOKS-MADE-INTO-FILMS 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF DANIEL KEYES 1st EDITIONS! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win. Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won’t guarantee their books, doesn't have a return policy, or doesn't correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
