Description: Included in this offering : One color copy of a family Bible record page, plus seven printed pages of important information to assist you in your research of John Henry Nearing of Connecticut, his wife Elizabeth (Murray) Nearing, their ten children and their cnildren's spouse(s), plus many of their children's descendants. The "O.S." and "N.S." to the right of the first five children listed on the Bible page refers to the Old-Style vs New-Style calendar year. In 1752, England and therefore it's American Colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar. The new year then began on January 1st instead of March 1st. The notation of "01" after John H. Nearing's name at the top of the page meant "the 1st", or "senior". Additional notes: I've never had the whole Bible, just this one page from it. In looking into which of John Henry's sons recorded this family history and when, I believe the evidence points to his son Henry. If it were Joseph, he would likely have recorded Henry's death at the bottom of the page as was done when their sister Ruby died. John and Elizabeth's daughters were highly unlikely to have recorded anything, as girls were rarely taught to write in school in the American Colonies prior to the Revolutionary War. Girls were taught to read but were intentionally not taught how to write. That changed soon after the war.It was most likely written in 1838 or early 1839 as Ruby's name was added later at the bottom of the page in slightly darker ink after her death in May of 1839. Henry died in 1845. The blue ink helps to date it also. Blue was being used in 1838 but became commonly used between 1839-1841. The page could not have been written prior to 1824 because the backside of this Bible page had a printed black and white illustration of a painting from 1824 by Leon Cogniet entitled the "Massacre of the Innocents". We have chosen to not make copies of this image due to it's very graphic depiction of the murder of baby boys as ordered by King Herod in the Bethlehem area. This tragedy was recorded in Matthew 2:16-18. There was no writing on the backside of the original page; only this illustration. I believe that there is one mistake made on this Bible page. Though it is still possible that it is not a mistake. The birth year of Hannah Nearing is written as 1755. I think that the author accidentally repeated that last number "5" when it should have been a "3", to make 1753, not 1755. My best guess is that he was copying from one family Bible to another and simply wrote the 5 twice. Supporting that idea is that with the exception of Ruby's death date, this page appears to have been written all at one time.Besides other documentation that Hannah was born in 1753 which I am including in this offer, statistically there was only a 1-2% chance of Ruby being born 11 months after Hannah prior to formula feeding. It was possible yes, but not likely. I believe the question of the correct spelling of several of the names will be settled with this document since Henry would surely have known how to spell his mother's name and how to pronounce and spell his siblings names. I am sorry for the need to cover up parts of the pages in the photographs. It was necessary to prevent copying (without purchasing). The pages that you receive will be complete. The documents will be carefully shipped in a sturdy rigid mailer with an easy-open pull tab. I will send out packages at least twice a week via USPS. While I do my very best to carefully research each item that I sell, I am unable to guarantee 100% accuracy of any antique document or record that I list. Thank you for looking and have a nice day!
