The Scientific Committee of all Rai Storia productions for the Centenary of the Great War also includes historians Bruna Bianchi, Alberto Melloni, Giovanni De Luna, Lucio Villari, Giovanni Sabbatucci and Emilio Gentile. The first DVD, on newsstands on September 5, retraces a period of precarious splendor before the changes that would soon overturn Europe. The Belle Époque, in fact, was not only a culturally and artistically rich era, but above all the expression of an optimism that spread across the Old Continent between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Innovation, scientific and technological progress — following the Industrial Revolution and the long peace after the Franco-Prussian War — had brought about a climate of great euphoria. It was this same progress that accelerated the latent tensions of a precarious peace, the result of economic expansionism and the nationalisms that emerged during the nineteenth century.
