Description: Comfrey (Symphytum Officinale) - 20 Seeds •Bee Friendly •Butterfly Friendly •Hummingbird Friendly •Non-GMO •American grown seeds Description: Comfrey is a perennial shrub that is native to Europe and some parts of Asia. Fond of moist soils, comfrey has a thick, hairy stem, and grows 1 to 3 feet tall. Its flowers are dull purple, blue or whitish, and densely arranged in clusters. The leaves are oblong, and often look different depending on where they are on the stem. Lower leaves are broad at the base and tapered at the ends while upper leaves are broad throughout and narrow only at the ends. The root has a black outside and fleshy whitish inside filled with juice. Medicinal Properties: Comfrey root has long been in use externally for bites, burns, bruises, sprains, stings, and wounds. It contains allantoin, which increases the growth of cells and is an excellent demulcent due to its high mucilage content. Comfrey root is also a useful anti-inflammatory. Planting Instructions: Start comfrey outdoors in late fall/early winter or in other times of the year after a 30 days cold stratification before planting in the greenhouse or receptive garden bed. Seedlings grow fast and in time send down a good taproot. You really have to grow them for 2 years before adequate root yield can be obtained. In the meantime, the leaves can be harvested, preferably just prior to flowering. In Zones 4 to 8, it would seem reasonable to expect a summer harvest of leaf in the first year, and at least 2 harvests of aerial parts per summer in successive years.
