COLLEEN MOORE - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/18/1981 - HFSID 160216 COLLEEN MOORE The early film star describes her famous fairy castle Typed Letter signed: "Colleen Moore", 1p, 8x11. Templeton, California, 1981 February 18. To David Wood, Ashford, Kent, England. In full: "I received your letter some time ago and I was wondering if you knew about my famous Fairy Castle now in the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago. It is unique in the world and is a magic miniature costing over one-half million dollars way back in 1928. The rooms have silver and gold chairs, one pair of chairs is made of real diamonds and emeralds. The chandelier in the drawing room is of gold, trimmed with real diamonds and emeralds and pearls. The light bulbs, the size of a grain of wheat, really light. It is an enchanted castle where only a five-inch tall fairy princess could live. A book called COLLEEN MOORE'S DOLL HOUSE has been written and has sixty-eight colored pictures inside. The book is published by Doubleday and Co., New York, and can be ordered from your local book store. If you should get the book and send it to me, I will gladly return it autographed to you. Please include return postage. And should you be in Chicago, do go to the Museum of Science and Industry and see the little castle as it now belongs to them and is on display, free, for everyone to see. It is the most popular display at the museum, and there is nothing like it in any museum in the whole world. My very best wishes". Colleen Moore (1900-1988) was the quintessential "flapper" of the 1920s in silent and early talking films (as in It Must Be Love, Ella Cinders, both 1926). Playing against type in her last starring role, she portrayed Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter (1934). Moore returned to the screen in 1961, playing a supporting role in a remake of one of her most memorable screen roles, 1933's The Power and the Glory. A canny investor, Moore authored three books on investing and finance, including How Women Can Make Money in the Stock Market. As a child, Moore had loved doll houses. In 1928, drawing on her Hollywood wealth, she began an ambitious project to create one that was absolutely fantastic. With the help of set designer/architect Horace Jackson, interior decorator Harold Grieve (who had decorated Moore's home), and 700 craftsmen, she created by 1935 an 8 cubit foot fairy castle containing 2000 miniatures at a price of $500,000. The castle is a popular exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Fine condition.
