Description: Barker, Clive. BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volumes I, II, III, IV, V, VI. London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1985. 1st hardcover editions. The BOOKS OF BLOOD were originally printed as paperback originals by Sphere Books Limited [1984-1985] of London. The bibliography of the BOOKS OF BLOOD is a bit complicated, but these are the most important matching signed, numbered, limited editions. With “This special edition published in 1985” and “Published in Great Britain in 1985 by George Weidenfeld & Nicolson Ltd” printed on the copyright pages of the first three books and “This special edition published in 1986” and “Published in Great Britain in 1986 by George Weidenfeld & Nicolson Ltd” printed on the copyright pages the last three books, all of which indicate that these are the correct 1st (hardcover) editions of these books. These are the signed, numbered, limited editions. There were also sets of hardcover trade editions that were published simultaneously with these limited editions with the same dust jacket artwork, but without the colophon pages and without Clive Barker’s signature(s). Each book has dust jacket artwork by Clive Barker and the artwork on the six dust jackets are all in the unique style of Clive Barker with none of the six books’ artwork being the same artwork. These signed, numbered, limited editions are all in black bindings with the correct publisher’s black topstain, with black endpapers, with metallic silver lettering on the spines of each book, and with all with the correct colophon pages (unpaginated: page A in each book [the first page after the front free endpaper]). BOOKS I, II, and III are #165/200 and BOOKS IV, V, and VI are #184/200. Again, it is important to recognize that each book is signed by Clive Barker. These are NOT a book club books. These are NOT an ex-library books. There was also a set of hardcover trade editions of BOOKS OF BLOOD that were published Weidenfeld & Nicolson simultaneously with the signed, numbered, limited editions that are offered here. The trade hardcover editions have the same dust jacket artwork as these limited editions, but were not signed or numbered. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Cliver Barker is one of the best and most famous horror and dark fantasy authors in the world. He makes the rest of us look like we’ve been asleep for the past ten years.” King has also been quoted as saying: “I have seen the future of horror, his name is Clive Barker.” From the introduction by the great horror writer Ramsey Campbell: “[With Clive Barker] I knew that horror fiction had found a new voice . . . If you like your horror fiction reassuring, both unreal enough not to be taken too seriously and familiar enough not to risk spraining your imagination or waking up your nightmares when you thought they were safely put to sleep, this book is not for you . . . This book is not for the faint of heart and imagination . . . Here you have nearly a quarter of a million words of Barker, published for the first time as he conceived the collection, as a single volume . . . It seems to me to be an astonishing performance, and the most exciting debut in horror fiction for many year.” This is a list of some of the awards and award nominations that Clive Barker has received: 1985: “Jacqueline Ess: Her Will and Testament.” World Fantasy Award nominee for Best Novella. 1985: “In the Hills, the Cities. From the dust jacket of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volume I: “ . . . Here are the stories written on the Book of Blood. They are a map of that dark highway that leads out of life towards unknown destination. Few will have to take it. Most will go peacefully along lamplit streets, ushered out of living with prayers and caresses. But for a few, a chosen few, the horrors will come, skipping, to fetch them off to the highway of the damned . . . So read . . . Read and learn . . . It’s best to be prepared for the worst, after all, and wise to learn to walk before breath runs out . . . ‘Clive Barker is the most important new writer of horror since Peter Straub.’ — Ramsey Campbell . . . ‘ . . . this three-volume collection of horror tales is original enough to revolutionize the field . . . ‘ — Locus . . .” From the lower portion of the front flap of the dust jacket: “Jacket illustration by Clive Barker.” From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . Born in Liverpool in 1952, Clive Barker’s early writing was almost entirely for the theatre. He has produced a number of comedies, histories, and grand guignol plays, which include: The History of the Devil, Subtle Bodies (in which a ship sinks on state), Frankenstein in Love, Colossus and The Secret Life of Cartoons. The combination of comic, dramatic, and fantastic elements in these plays is reflected in his work as illustrator, short-story writer and novelist. Clive Barker and his first novel, THE DAMNATION GAME, is published this autumn . . . “ From the dust jacket of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volume II: “ . . . Here are the stories written on the Book of Blood. They are a map of that dark highway that leads out of life towards unknown destination. Few will have to take it. Most will go peacefully along lamplit streets, ushered out of living with prayers and caresses. But for a few, a chosen few, the horrors will come, skipping, to fetch them off to the highway of the damned . . . So read . . . Read and learn . . . It’s best to be prepared for the worst, after all, and wise to learn to walk before breath runs out . . . ‘ . . . this is good news for the genre. Barker’s stories are consistently ambitious, original and skillfully rendered. His work is as provocative, powerful and well-crafted as any fiction being written today.’ — Fantasy Review . . . “ From the dust jacket of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volume III: “ . . . The name of the future in horror may well be Clive Barker — Stephen King . . . ‘ . . . ‘Such a debut seems almost miraculous. Even in this season of superb British novels, Barker leaves a permanent mark. — Locus . . . “ From the dust jacket of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volume IV: “ . . . The first three BOOKS OF BLOOD set new standards for contemporary horror fiction. ‘The future of horror’, said Stephen King, ‘is Clive Barker’ . . . Now Barker continues the sequence, taking his skills as a weaver of terrifying stories to new heights of invention. Horror has never been more eloquently written, nor more brutally powerful . . . These new stories — some of novella length — mingle theoretic with the barbaric, the beautiful with the repulsive, in the potent (and prize-winning) cocktail of fantasy, mystery, and pure nightmare that has rapidly elevated Barker to the first rank of horror writers . . . Here you will encounter monsters so extraordinary they beggar the imagination, and others so familiar they seem to step from your most private day dreams. You will find morbidly witty tales that raise a sly smile even as they chill your sweat; and others so unrepentantly horrific, so pungently real, they will leave you shaking . . . This is horror quite unlike anything you’ve read before — outrageous enough to excite the most jaded palate, yet so strongly rooted in our fears that we cannot help but be drawn into Barker’s brooding, blasphemous, yet hugely exhilarating world . . . Reviews of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volumes I, II, & III: ‘Barker’s work processes a visual flair unusual in any fiction, let alone the horror genre.’ — BOOKS & BOOKMEN . . . ‘There is some very fine work here indeed . . . The most successful of Barker’s horror strategies is his ability to pile extraordinary terrors onto ordinary ones.’ — CITY LIMITS . . . “ From the dust jacket of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volume V: From the dust jacket of BOOKS OF BLOOD, Volume IV: “ . . . I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: Each of the six books are FINE books in FINE dust jackets. These are unread copies of these books. Each book is bound in the publisher’s black cloth binding with very bright silver lettering on the spine of each book. Each book has the correct black endpapers. Each book has the correct publisher’s black topstain. Each book is signed and numbered on the colophon page, which is the first white page after the black front free endpaper. Each dust jacket has Clive Barker’s distinctive artwork. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to any of the dust jackets. Volumes I, II, and III are encased in the correct publisher's black cloth slipcase and volumes IV, V, and VI are encased in the correct publisher's black cloth slipcase. Each slipcase has the remnants of the publisher’s shrinkwrap that encased the slipcase. Volumes I, II, and III are matching numbers: #165/200. Volumes IV, V, and VI are matching numbers: #184/200. The title pages indicate which volume the book is in the sequence, but are otherwise the alike. The copyright pages for volumes I, II, and III are all exactly alike and the copyright pages for volumes IV, V, and VI are all exactly alike. Again, each book has the correct 1st state dust jacket with Clive Barker’s fantastic dust jacket artwork. At the time of this listing, this is the only six-volume set of the Weidenfeld & Nicolson signed, numbered, limited 1st hardcover editions of Clive Barker's BOOKS OF BLOOD currently being offered for sale on EBAY. A must for the collector of historically important horror 1st editions and/or the collector of books made into movies and/or the collector of Clive Barker 1st editions. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
