Description: This vintage original artwork was purchased in 1993 from the Northern Art Impressions Gallery in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. The artwork is titled "Love Call" and is signed C. Wescoupe/93.... by the artist Clemence Wescoupe (1951-2018), an Ojibwa Indian from the Long Plains Reserve near Portage Le Prairie, Manitoba, Canada. He was one of the five influential native artists who created the movement known as Woodland Indian Art. The work of the Woodlands Artists is of a decorative nature in that it is design-oriented in content. Their art presents images which speak to the poetic elements of Indian consciousness. Clemence Wescoupe specializes in the poetic interpretation of birds and animals, using a minimum of detail. He is known for his art's simplicity of line and his remarkable use of color and space. He uses negative space as a integral part of the overall design of his subject. This painting, titled "Love Call" depicts a loon in its cry, calling for a mate. The painting which is abstract in nature, measures 12x16 and the artist used acrylic paints with no texture. Mr. Wescoupe employs a white background to emphsize his well-known style of utilizing negative space and then adds fine flowing, elegant lines. The loon is painted almost entirely in black; however, the focal point, being the center of the bird's body, has slightly bolder curved lines highlighted by using the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow. The painting is asymmetrical with the curving circular lines almost portraying motion. This and all of Mr. Wescoupe's paintings reveal and share with the viewer his spiritual inheritance from the American Indian culture. Clemence Wescoupe was a self-taught artist who achieved national and international acclaim in his early youth and was one of the most collected Indian artists. This artwork "might" be one-of-a-kind from the artist, as it is not numbered and I have not seen this specific "Love Call" painting or notecard posted elsewhere. The first four photos were taken without the glass as it was causing a terrible glare on the photographs. The last photo is one of the artwork hanging, with the glass, hence the glare. Note: There appears to be the tiniest blemish in the watercolor paper which is barely noticeable. It is on the right side, mid-body of the loon.
