Description: Clark Ashton Smith, The Black Abbot of Puthuum, The RAS Press Edition, 2007. A Most RARE, Brand New Softcover, Japanese style binding with string. Limited Number 24/250. Please read below for a great story about the original manuscript. It is unfortunate, but there is one slight flaw to the condition of this item. It appears that the binding edge was dented during shipment from the post office. Take a look at the photos. You will see it mostly on the front cover, while hardly noticeable on the back. It does carry through the first couple pages, but lessens as the pages move inward. The tipped-in photo of the art work adds to the overall concept. In February of 1935, CAS submitted three stories to Weird Tales Editor Farnsworth Wright, who accepted all but "The Black Abbot of Puthuum," until the tale was drastically cut and rewritten. When the story finally appeared in the March, 1936 issue, it was 1500 words shorter, a pivotal character was excised from the tale, and the ending was completely different. The rejected manuscript lay buried in the collection of H.P. Lovecraft's executor Robert H Barlow, and only now, more than 70 years later, is the story published as its author originally conceived it. Complementing the text is a tipped-in illustration reproduced from the original Weird Tales artwork of Virgil Finlay. The artwork-long thought lost-was located in the collection of a friend of Clark Ashton Smith's and has not been seen since its first appearance. This is truly an exquisite piece of collectible ephemera for the CAS collector.
