In very good vintage condition with some age lines. One of the square plates has a chip at the backside corner: Please see photos. Clarice Cliff (1899-1972) was one of the most important British ceramicists of the interwar period. Her work is instantly recognizable, a style that refused the streamline cool of art deco, and instead took its cue from the fractured planes of cubism and the mordant humor of surrealism. Her work was -- as she named it -- "bizarre". From a working class family, Cliff quickly rose through the ranks of pottery workers to become not only one of England's most sought after designers, but also one of it's most successful female entrepreneurs. Marked underglaze "The Biarritz Royal Staffordshire Great Britain Regd. No.784849" used from 1933 to the end of the decade to prevent copies. This mark remained as the consistent backstamp with a further backstamp added to identify the decorator. These examples are marked "Bizarre" indicating that it is Cliff's own decoration.
