Description: Yorktown, Virginia was a strategic Civil War city and was occupied by the Union Army in 1862. An Original Civil War Letter from Captain Oswald Jackson at Yorktown, May 9, 1863 to Miss Ella M Williams in Philadelphia- "my darling" he reports he is has been very miserable, having not received her daily letter- he dreads each missed letter, fearing that something may have happened to her. His messmates had a "jolly Lark" repeatedly pranking their tent mate Farnsworth by collapsing his bed on him. Fitzhugh Lee is now 5 miles away so today we & the General rode around his campfires, expecting Lee may try to raid our camp. Major Oswald Jackson enlisted as a private with the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1861 , was then commissioned to 1st LT, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry Rush's Lancers a few months later and made US Volunteer Aide de Camp to General ED Keyes, took part in the Richmond and Gettysburg Campaigns, resigning with General Keyes in August, 1863.. He was a successful businessman and well known yachtsman in New York after the War.The 4pp 8 x 5 ink letter is overwritten, giving it 8 pages of content and a challenge to read but fortunately comes with a full typed transcript. Minor age stains, edge wear, Overall VG. (The letter is very romantic, they were married until his death in 1891). He signs the letter "Ever your own- Ossie".
