Description: Citrus trifoliate is a shrub/tree in the Rutaceae family. Its native range is central and southern China. Familiar names include Japanese Hardy Orange, Bitter Orange, trifoliate orange, and Poncirus trifoliate. A unique citrus species that has compound leaves and is deciduous with pubescent fruit. It is not an edible fruit. It can be used for hedging and is very effective with its density. It has been used as a citrus Woodstock. It can grow to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide with strong densely packed stems that are covered with thorns. The flowers are white with pink stamens around an inch wide and fragrant. The fruits are lime size and will turn yellow once ripe. It prefers to grow under full sun to part shade with average water needs. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Zones 6-9 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1/2" deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 30-60 days.
