Description: For sale is a wonderful 19th century American school portrait painting of a lovely lady. The painting is oil on canvas and features a woman in a very poignant pose. Her gaze is just off to the left of the viewer. She has a charming look about her as if she is someone's loving and caring mother. She is very well rendered with exceptionally fine detail to the lace collar and her brooch. She is set against that classic brownidh olive background with the glow of a light source behind her as was very common on these nineteenth century portraits. The canvas has a stencil stamp from William Baumgras & Sons which supplied artist materials and framing in Syracuse, New York. There was also a label on the former frame from the same Syracuse art supply store. The frame is not with the painting. Although Syracuse had some very prominent portrait, painters at the time including Sanford Thayer, the painting is unsigned and likely from an itinerant artist. Overall, the painting is an exceptionally fine condition for age. We still no indications of any overpay or in painting. It appears to be untouched.
