Description: ChippendaleMahoganyParcel-Gilt Looking GlasswithPhoenix Finial We offer a fully formed eighteenth century Chippendale looking glass mirror in mahogany veneer with partial-gilt adornments and an eglomise glass panel. The rectangular frame is capped by gilt foliated scrolled swan neck pediments flanking a carved gesso and gilt detachable finial in the shape of a phoenix. The frame is enriched by gilt draperies of flowers and leaves. The lower corners of the frame feature scrolled cutwork. The wood appears to be mahogany and satinwood veneers over a pine or poplar base wood. An oval upright marquetry shell motif is centered on the upper panel. Carved gilt liners surround the two glass plates. The upper eglomise glass plate features a central diamond with a spread winged eagle in gold and black over a shield of stars and stripes. Opposing arrows support stars and stripes ornamented drapery swags. Cornucopia baskets filled with fruit surrounded by leaves and vines flank both sides of the center diamond panel. The lower glass plate appears to be original, as do the back panels, and when inspected from side to side reveals stenciled lettering bleeding through from the reverse. Three rows of block letters in reverse and upside down, about two inches in total height, appear near the top of the plate. It reads "N.E.M.P." over "BOSTON MA." over numbers that possibly read as "1-35".The wood on the looking glass has not been tested but is considered crafted in America but could be English. The looking glass measures 51" in height, 24 1/4" in width and 3" in depth. As seen in the photographs, there is a small loss of veneer to upper left block supporting the left drapery. There is discoloration to background of center medallion on the eglomise plate. Additional photographs are available on request. We can crate and ship or assist your shipper of choice.
