Description: Chinese Ming Dynasty (15th Century) Incised Decorated Brown Spouted Four Lug Handled Jar Wonderful Ming Dynasty brown jar with incised dark brown decoration in Song Dynasty style with spout and four lug handles. The body is made of a reddish brown stoneware and wheel thrown. The jar has a barrel form with sloping shoulder and a long neck with a wide flared rim. There are four applied lug handles on the shoulder and an applied upward spout. The base has a flat bottom typically found on Ming period pieces. The body is decorated in incised designs that include stylized flowers and mushroom. The shoulder is decorated in flowers designs and the base has a half moon design band at the foot. Though the designs are in Song period style these forms are more round and more abstract that would be seen from the Song period and are more like those seen in the Ming Dynasty. The incised designs are in filled with dark brown glaze and the remainder of the vessel is in brown glaze. One side has encrustation in the glaze. A result of flame (with oxygen) mixing in the glaze and then additional age which has further oxidized the glaze. This vessel would have been used for storing bulk liquids or oils and would have hung from the ceiling. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. It does show evidence of additional age oxidation but there is no distinct evidence of burial though it could have been buried for a short time (a few hundred years or less). Under 40X magnification the glaze surface is covered in tiny use wear scratches concentrating around the finish, rim and widest part of the body. The lugs show wear from having hung from ropes and the base also exhibits wear. The piece is notable for its unusual vessel form and stylized designs.
