The cliffs are spectacular, changing every year, even sometimes every month, as ocean storms eat away at the beach and cliff sand and send it all north, toward Chappaquiddick. A hundred years from now the places we walk will all be on the ocean floor. THE ARTIST: Forrest Proper is a bookseller, poet, writer, and artist who lives in a creaky Victorian house a few farm fields away from the Connecticut River in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, where he often may be found pottering in his gardens and devising ways to outwit the woodchucks.
