Description: Charles Burles was born on June 21st 1936 at Marseilles into a music-loving family. At an early age he sang in choirs and won numerous competitions. A painter decorator, he dreamed of becoming a tenor and studies with Léon Cazauran. He made his debut at Toulon in 1958 in The Barber of Seville. Two months later he left to do his military service in Algeria where he continued to work at the Opera in Oran. After his return he recorded “La vie de Bohème” with Hélène Piroir and Valère Blouse. In 1963 he was engaged by Louis Ducreux for the Marseille Opera where he sang all the light tenor roles. But it was in 1968 in the revival of “La Juive” in Toulon in the perilous role of Leopold, along side Tony Poncet that his career really took off. In 1969 he sang his first “Jongleur de Notre-Dame” by Massenet. The response from the critic was unanimous. P. Bessand Massenet, the grandson of the composer declared “I believe that Massenet would have approved of the interpreter, in saying that no other artist has interpreted the role in a more moving and impressive way than Charles Burles.” Jean Giraudeau called him to the Opéra Comique in 1969. He made his debut there in Zoroastre by Rameau. In 1970 he created Claudel’s “L’Annonce faites a Marie” with music by Renzo Rossellini, which he also sang in Turin and Venice. In 1971 L. Ducreux put on “Le Postillon de Longjumeau” for him and which he then sang in several opera houses. Bernard Gavotty declared; “C. Burles, the very high tenor vocalised his top notes with the virtuosity of an embroiderer. He also took on “La Dame Blanche” and “ Si j’etais roi”, not to forget the Barber. In 1973 the Ghent Opera (Belgium) invited him for the role of Arturo in “I Puritani” with Maria Fleta, the granddaughter of Miguel Fleta. Respecting the pitch of the score he gave the high F in the third act. In 1977 Rolf Libermann cast him in Platée by Rameau. In addition he added “The Abduction from the Seraglio” by Mozart and Cimarosa.s “Secret Marriage” to his repertoire. With equal success he sang in “Les Pecheurs de Perles, often with his friend the baritone Pierre Le Hémonet, “Mignon”, “Don Pasquale” “The Italian girl in Algiers”, “The Siege of Corinth” “Comte Ory” “Mireille”, “Les Paladins; but also “La Boheme” and “Rigoletto”.He did not disdain to sing operettas either. From 1996 he sang and played comprimario roles. He made his farewell in 2006 in the role of Altoum in Turandot in Marseille.A fine craftsman with impreccable diction, elegance of vocal line, nuances and phrasing, master of high notes and a fine diminuendo from loud to soft without breaking, he left the memory of a generous tenor always willing to offer an encore to satisfy the public.A worthy successor to Miguel Villabella, he recorded “La Belle Hélène”, “Lakmé”, “The Barber”, “William Tell” and numerous operettas.Jacqueline Pongy, traduction de Patrick Bade ADOLPHE ADAM (1803–1856)Le Postillon de Longjumeau 1Rondeau de Chapelou 2Assis au pied d’un hêtre FRANÇOIS–ADRIEN BOIELDIEU (1775–1834)La Dame Blanche 3“Ah quel plaisir d’être soldat...” 4“Viens gentille Dame...” 5 Réverie de Georges Brown GIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792–1868)Guillaume Tell 6Air du Pêcheur AIMÉ MAILLART (1817–1871)Les Dragons de Villars 7“Ne parle pas, Rose je t’en supplie” JULES MASSENET (1842–1912)Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame 8“ O liberté m’amie..”ADOLPHE ADAM (1803–1856)Si j’étais Roi 9“J’ignore son nom...” 10“Elle est princesse...” 11Le réveil du Roi CHARLES GOUNOD (1818–1893)Mireille 12 “Anges du paradis...”AMBROISE THOMAS (1811–1896)Mignon 13“Elle ne croyait pas...” 14“Adieu Mignon, courage...”GEORGES BIZET (1838–1875)Les Pêcheurs de Perles 15Duo Zurga-Nadir (avec Pierre le Hemonet) 16“Je crois entendre encore...”FREDERICK DELIUS (1862–1934)Lakmé 17“Prendre le dessin d’un Bijou...” GIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792–1868) 1Le Barbier de Séville 2Le Conte OryGAETANO DONIZETTI (1797–1848)Don Pasquale 3Come gentil 4 DuoJEAN-PHILIPPE RAMEAU (1783–1864) 5Les PaladinsGIUSEPPE VERDI (1813–1901)Rigoletto 6 Air du DucWOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756–1791) 7L’enlevement au sérailANDRÉ MESSAGER (1853–1929) 8Fisch ton kanFRANZ LEHÀR (1870–1948)Le Pays du Sourire 9 Dans l’ombre blanche 10 Je t’ai donné mon CoeurGIACOMO PUCCINI (1858–1924)La Bohème 11 Que cette main est froideGIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792–1868)L’italienne à Alger 12 Languir per una bellaDOMENICO CIMAROSA (1749–1801) 13Le mariage secretVINCENZO BELLINI (1801–1835)I Puritani 14 A te o cara 15 Acte III
