Description: Here's a standard sized carte de visite, 2 3/8" x 4", of Horace Greeley, obviously a lot younger than at the time he became the "Democratic and Liberal Republican" presidential candidate back in 1872. This is more from the days towards the end of the Civil War or shortly thereafter once he'd written his famous history of that conflict. In this image, one can really see the famous under-the-chin whiskers appearing and his trademark glasses. Having been a life-long Whig and republican party member, many people mocked him for his 1872 political opportunism, including Thomas Nast in cartoons on the pages of Harper's Weekly. Greeley had a terrible year that year: his wife died just before the election, he got his clock cleaned by President Ulysses Grant in early November, and he died within a month from then, a broken man and railing against Whitelaw Reid who had taken control of Greeley's New York Tribune. We're listing a whole group of Greeley photographs showing his physical change over the years. This is in nice condition but please look at our images to judge condition for yourself so you can be happy with it. Remember, this stuff's called ephemera, folks, since it was made to be used and then discarded. So, we're just lucky to have things like this in any condition to add to our collections.
