Description: CATGARD EXPANDING GASKET by Condar "The Combustor Experts" 2" wide by 22" long This gasket can be used to wrap around Condar catalyst to ensure tighter fit in combustor housing. Golden flecks of mineral mica throughout the spongy CatGard material expand rapidly when heated and exposed to steam. Material maintains its expanded size, even after cooling. CatGard should never be used for other woodstove applications! Other types of gaskets are correct for doors, etc.--consult your stove dealer or chimney sweep. When installing a replacement combustor, always allow a visible expansion joint between catalyst and stove housing, whether your replacement is ceramic or steel. Don't "pack" your replacement combustor into stove housing with CatGard or any other kind of exterior gasket. If installed with no visible expansion joint, your combustor is subject to premature fracturing and overheating of stove components. Un-needed gaskets make the combustors difficult to remove. Installing New Combustor Gasket If you need to replace gasket remove all of the old gasket before installing new gasket. If you are installing gasket, carefully tape starter edge to combustor. Wrap gasket around combustor and tape end down. Any additional gasket should be cut off before taping ends together. Be cautious overlapping the gasket - most people only need one layer. Remember that new CatGard gasket can swell up to a maximum of double its thickness! New gasket material isn't supposed to completely fill the cavity. If you pack a new combustor into the housing with so much gasket that you do not have a visible expansion joint your combustor may crack or crumble once the gasket expands. When removing the catalytic combustor from your woodstove for summer inspection, you'll typically see the expanded gasket has become fragile. It may crumble. During the life of your combustor, if you have additional gasket installed, you'll likely need at least one replacement gasket, and possibly a new one every year -- depending on the design of your stove and your operating patterns. Before ordering make sure the depth of your combustor matches this CatGard’s width. Then measure the perimeter of your combustor and make sure you order enough gasket to cover the full length. You may need to order multiple pieces of gasket.
