Description: Catalpa bignonioides is a deciduous tree in the Bignoniaceae family. Its native range is from eastern Texas to southern Georgia. Familiar names are Catawba, Cigar Tree, Fish-Bait Tree, Indian Bean Tree, and Southern Catalpa. The Catalpa bears some of the showiest flowers of all the American native trees. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The wood is used for railroad ties and fence posts. It has few insect enemies and is fairly disease-free. It is a medium-sized tree growing to around 50-60 feet tall with a trunk 40 inches in diameter. The leaves are heart-shaped, 8-12 inches long, and 6-8 inches wide. They have tiny glands on the axils of the primary vein that secrete nectar. The white fragrant flowers are trumpet-shaped with speckles of yellow, purple, and maroon. They are in bloom from Mid-spring until early summer. Hummingbirds, birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. It prefers to grow in full sun with average water needs. Zones 5-9 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep, tamp in and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
