Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) CARDIFF CASTLE: EAST FRONT AND KEEP. The growth of Cardiff since 1811, when the population only numbered 2,557, has been enormous. It has been due to the foresight of the Trustees of the Marquis of Bute, whose residence is the present Cardiff Castle. There has always been a castle here of some sort, from British times downward; but the present building is almost entirely modern. Much of it is no doubt built upon the older foundations, and the various details of a medival fortress have been reproduced. But it may be doubted if the whole is a success; and such reproduction in a modern country-seat seems meaningless, and must be highly inconvenient. The keep and the Black Tower (in which the unfortunate Duke of Normandy is said to have been confined) are the only noteworthy remains of the original building.
