Here is a genuine slice of a piece of the famous Campo del Cielo meteorite, which roared towards Earth about 4200-4700 years ago, and hit at about 8,700 miles per hour in what is today Argentina. The first of many craters were first reported in 1576. The meteorite was made primarily of iron (92.6%) and nickel (6.67%), with 0.25% phosphorus, 0.43% cobalt, 3.6 ppm iridium, 87 ppm gallium, and 407 ppm germanium . This slice has been polished to reveal the wonderful Widmanstätten patterns across both cut faces. It is about .78” by .61” by .12” thick (varies), and it weighs 6.0 grams. The meteorite is estimated to have been about 4.5 billion years old, formed as part of the beginnings of our Solar System.
