Description: Calvert Vaux was partner of A.J. Downing, the “Father of American Landscape Architecture”. This work was published after the untimely demise of Downing and is dedicated to his memory. Inside contains many plans for various country houses often with the name of the client who commissioned the house and other interesting commentary. In good condition, the spine is problematic with chips to head and tail as well as loss of some part. (We have the piece saved and will send it along): inside has foxing and light soiling from handling as well as some pencil writing. Striking pictorial boards with gilt design, design repeated on rear as embossed but no gilding. Spine has gilding also. Multiple sets of plans inside illustrated with a variety of in-text and full page engravings. Good Condition: 8vo: original publisher’s boards with gilt decorations and embossing; gilt decoration on spine with top half away, tail has chipping with beginning of crack at front and rear from bottom up: pencil markings inside front as well as bookplate of previous owner: unusual endpaper design looks like charcoal or pencil rubbing; has penciled name under and date of some sort: contents complete with color plate of encaustic tiles: some foxing and discoloration due to age as well as light soiling from handling: “Villas and Cottages.
