Description: A neat vintage tool from circa 1930s - the Murray-Black wallpaper number 22 trimmer/cutter with the original instructions, box and extra washers. You'll notice this tool has a slot on the bottom. You would want to pair this with a 7" to 72" straight edge ruler from this same company which this trimmer was designed to slide onto. The small square paper above the washers is an envelope and it explains the use of these washers with that straight edge ruler. A little background on this tool and company. This is a modified version of a similar trimmer invented by Charles Ridgely who would partner with businessman, Laban Murray in 1915. Ridgely was a great inventor but a bad businessman; Murray was a good businessman but not much of an innovator. The partnership only lasted a year, but some type of agreement seemed to have been made for Murray to sell Ridgely's inventions after the partnership dissolved. In 1921 a new partnership formed between Murray and another businessman, Joseph Black to form the Murray-Black Company. The company lasted up to the 1980's and were mostly on cruise control with a limited selection of paint and wallpaper tools but very few patents. The overall condition is good. The trimmer has a nice rustic appeal with a darkened patina and a little surface rust. The box, envelope and instructions are a bit beaten up and stained but still nice references to its originality. Interesting and innovative tool referencing a period of history when wallpaper was in widespread use in America homes. Now, it’s rarely considered as an option for wallcovering.
