Item 484900-20 ◊ ca. 1917 Type-1 Press Photograph, WWI Cavalrymen taking care of their Horse Tack. Rare and fantastic photographs, "ca. 1917 Type-1 Press Photograph, WWI Cavalrymen taking care of their Horse Tack." We received this photo along with other Press Photographs and other promo photos, which were released by News Agencies from the UK, and the USA, during the war. This wonderful WWI Type 1 Press Photograph measures approx. 7-7/8" X 5-5/8” (≈20 cm. X 14.3 cm.) It shows at least 7 cavalrymen working with their horses' tack. Behind them you can see a long row of horses from behind. It looks cold; the men are all wearing warm coats. We imagine, they're probably having a difficult time working with the leather and other equipment under those conditions. The back of the photo states:COPYRIGHT NEWSPAPER ILLUSTRATIONS LTD.161A, STRAND, W.G.By our Staff Photographers, Special War ServiceCOPYRIGHT IN U.S.A. BY INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICEThis impressive photo is in very good condition. If you look closely at the photo you will see some white spots. These were obviously in the negatives, because it's not in the paper. And there's a bit of curling to the photo, which is very typical. The edges show no wear, while the corners show a tiny bit of bumping. Please see all of the photos above, to confirm the condition of this photo.Horses have been used in warfare since around 1500 BC. They were used in the Civil War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Spanish-American War. So there was no reason to believe that horses would not be valuable in the Great War. The military mainly used horses for logistical support; they were better than mechanized vehicles at traveling through deep mud and over rough terrain. Horses were used for reconnaissance and for carrying messengers, as well as pulling artillery, ambulances, and supply wagons. The presence of horses often increased morale among the soldiers at the front. BUT the animals contributed to disease and poor sanitation in camps, caused by their manure and carcasses. The value of horses was having decreasing value, and a tactical decision was made to "not replace" them. By the end of the war horses were in short supply for all sides.PLEASE NOTE: This is an original, ca. 1917 Type 1 Press Photograph - it is not a reprint, reissue, reproduction or modern printing but was printed from the original negative, by the original copyright holder shortly after the Photograph was taken - certainly less than 2 years which is the standard for Type 1 designation. The image is unconditionally guaranteed to be deemed an original, Type 1 Press Photo by any third party authentication." Please see all of the photos above to confirm the contents and condition of these photos.
