Description: c 1830 - 1835 Bone China Gaudy ‘Cornucopia’ Tea Set for Six, Staffordshire Reference: Philip Miller and Michael Berthoud, ‘An Anthology of British Teapots,’ Plate 1907, pp xiii, 318. ‘…By 1830 there were over fifty makers of china in the Staffordshire Potteries and of these only about ten per cent have wares positively ascribed as few marked their wares.’ If you are looking for a display set with the 'WOW' factor, this set is it! This is a rare bone china Gaudy Tea Set made by a pottery in Staffordshire, England, in an Imari-decorated ‘Cornucopia’ pattern in cobalt blue, light sky blue, cream, orange, rust, and with gold/gilt decoration and accents. There is a number 198 on one piece, and 261 on another, but no other markings or manufactory insignia. According to Miller and Berthoud it is classified as the “round neo rococo shape with 4 moulded feet,” and as unidentified bone china, c 1830 – 1835, meaning that the exact maker is unknown. This Tea Set consists of: (1) Teapot with Lid: 10” W x 7.25” H Staple Repair to bottom, spout repair.(1) Sugar with Lid: 7.5” W. x 6” D x 6” H(1) Creamer: 6” W x 4.25” D x 4.75” H(1) Waste or Slop Bowl: 6.5” W x 4” H Staple Repair, and rim chip.(2) 12-Sided Cake Plates: 8.75” x 8.75” One plate with Staple Repair.(6) Cups: 4.5” W x 3.75” D x 2.25” H(6) Saucers: 5.75” W x 1” H Please ignore the white glare reflections in the photos. This Gaudy Tea Set was cherished by their owners or family so much that at some point when a couple of pieces were damaged, it was professionally repaired using staples, making them for display only. The staple repair method was discontinued around 1900. Today, staple-repaired porcelain is rare and considered valuable. This striking, Gaudy Tea Set is almost 200 years old and the display value is highly desirable, outstanding, and impressive.
