Description: BUFFALO HORN POWDER HORN,MOUNTAINMAN WILLIAM CRAIG, 1820/1860 This very rare buffalo bicon horn was made into a powder horn & used by Mountain Man Willian Craig from 1820 to 1869. He was a trapper & hunter in the Blackfoot & Nez Perce Indian country & lived with the Nez Perce Indians for many years, marying a chief's daughter. It is a pistol powder horn & is cream, light brown & dark brown colors. It is 4 5/8” long with a flat wood base held onto the horn by small iron pins/nails & is in good well used condition without anu gouges, cracks or rot, I also have his large rifle powder horn but it is now missing the base, if interested in it also email me. There are very few mountain man artifacts ever seen at antique or militeria shows or in antique shops anymore & are now considered to be quite rare! It was bought directly from the Craig family many years ago. It comes with a certificate of authenticity & historical research. * William Craig was born1807in Greenbrier County, Virginia & was an American Mountainman, frontiersman and trapper. He left his Virginia home as a young man and He trapped with the Sublettes (William and Milton) and Jedediah Smith in the Blackfoot country from 1822 to1833 & then he joined Joseph R. Walker's California Expedition of 1833–34. Craig married Pahtissah in 1838(he renamed her Isabel), a Nez Perce woman who was the daughter of Hin-mah-tute-ke-kaikt also known as Thunder Eyes. Craig was friendly with the Nez Perce tribe. government Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Joel Palmer, appointed William Craig his agent to the Nez Perces. Craig served as interpreter between the Nez Perce leaders and Isaac Stevens at the Treaty of 1855. He died of a stroke in 1869. :
