Description: This is a slightly unusual 3-sided double set, a 1956 mono British import double LP set from His Master's Voice (ALPS 1351 and ALP 1352) featuring a complete performance of Brahms' A German Requiem. Featured performers include Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone) and Elisabeth Grümmer (soprano); backed by the Choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral, Berlin; and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Rudolf Kempe. Although this was published as a double-album set in order to record the entire work, each disc is packaged individually in its own album as if sold separately. The work is 3-sided, with the blank fourth side instead engraved with three large His Master's Voice logos and a huge "DO NOT PLAY THIS SIDE" warning in the center. (See Photos 6 & 7) (There is an outer safety groove pressed on the blank side that will catch the stylus to keep it from drifting over the logos if that side is accidentally played on a changer.) The disc sides are in stack order, with ALPS 1351 holding Side 1 and the blank Side 4. ALP 1352 holds Side 2 and Side 3. A UK Purchase Tax Code of RT is stamped in the center of each. Album notes are in English by Andrew Porter, with German lyrics and translations. Notes begin on the back of ALPS 1351 and continue to the back of ALP 1352. Album sleeves are in generally excellent condition. There is a small area on the back of ALPS 1351 where the clear plastic coating has peeled away from the open edge. Each outer sleeve shows a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back. (Photos 3 & 9) This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear. NOTES:Album sleeves may have a small index sticker, usually in the upper right corner of the back, which was applied when the album was first purchased for this private collection. Please be sure you know the Shipping charge to your address before bidding.
