Description: TITLE: DYLAN IN VEGAS I am honored to have many collectors in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and other parts of the worldquite a few prominent musicians, actors and actresses also own my worka partial listof my celebrity collectorsincludes- Julia Roberts,Jimmy Vaughan, and Willie Nelson for more about my work:rock and roll icon art by kata billups, rockandrolliconart.com, cadiz ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF WORK: In this piece, Dylan is my doppelganger- doing living theater... standing in the middle of a Las Vegas avenue wearing an historic actors skirt. This piece was inspired by a story told to me by a lawyer years ago. He'd just returned from having a few beers at an old established Asheville bar- with some of the town's 'rulers and kings'.They started passing around pictures from their semi annual trip to a huge house they rented in Mexico.First were the expected photos of the waves and little towns- but then came the naked children. His mind was trapped like a record with a scratch in it... Then he came unhinged; took off all his clothes, climbed on top of the table and did a 'jig'.His friends laughed--They had no idea he was experiencing-i think maybe he mentioned --something about...a crisis of faith. A few years later I heard similar stories; this time- in Charleston- South Carolina. Tales of giant sex parties with soiled diapers and cigars. Stories of regular orgies among the cities' most prominent citizens. Then in Aspen I was told of dinner parties with napkin holders in the shape of a penises. It will take people who give a shi# to rebuild morals and culture... distancing from ‘devices’ and reuniting people with their capacity for empathy. A NOTE FROM KATA:WHAT MAKES MY ART DIFFERENTFROM OTHER ROCK AND ROLL THEMED ART WORKS? When I initially work on this topic years ago, I entitled the article 'Kata's work versus Other CRAP' but nowadays people are so sensitive to 'shaming and blaming etc.' that I couldn't get away with that title anymore. But the true part about it was this: just about anybody can capture an image of someone from the torso up (a bust it's called) but only trained artists can place a subject in a scene and then a small handful in that group have anything to 'say' with their work. That's where my work comes in- each piece has a message derived from some autobiographic event in my life. Since I was a teenage artist, I was driven to express my ideas through my work. When my rock and roll icon artwork began (in the late 1980's) I was one of the first to be working in this genre (beside the great illustrators for the Rolling Stone Magazine and Andy Warhol and a few others). I hinted at above, and most importantly, all my work 'works' on multiple levels and that is one thing that led to its popularity. My collectors are generally well educated and well-traveled people; (many have been to all the major museums in the world) therefore- they recognize the underlying messages, the parts of my work referencing other works, the wryness or comic insinuations I make in certain pieces etc. etc. and that is why they buy my work. I've heard from collectors again and again saying things like: "I don't even LIKE Elvis, but your work spoke to me, and I bought it". That's because my work is not REALLY about Elvis or the Beatles or anyone- it's about life's larger themes which I feel compelled to make a statement about through the recognizable aging (and some now gone) rock icons. They are my doppelgangers. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: This piece is category 4. DIMENSIONS: 6" high, 6" wide and 1.5" deep NOTES: on 2 sides of the gallery wrap canvas I glued a very old photograph of a woman I found in an antique shop. One image shows one side. My wonderful husband (who is now also my photographer) did not get a pic. of the other side. There is a yellow green tint to some of the paint. It's inspired by thesick feeling (written about in the description). The PRIMARY ORIGINAL of this piece is about 10 times as big and sold toan eBay Collector about ten years ago. CATEGORIES OF WORK:(listed in descending order by price and rarity) 1. PRIMARY ORIGINALS These are the most time-consuming, most expensive and generally the largest in scale of my works. They are owned by hundreds of Private Individuals and many Museums worldwide. One Primary Original work of art can take weeks, months or even years to create. For decades I created an average of five to twenty pieces of this large, time-consuming type work per year. I am taking a break from creating them to build up a new category of work (see 5. below), work on writing and publishing some of my books and pursing spiritual goals. 2. VERSIONS OF WORK These are generally the second most time-consuming and expensive of my worksand are owned by hundreds of individuals across the world. They are entirely hand-painted VERSIONS of certain Primary Original Paintings (some which have sold and some have not). The demand for them arose when Patrons admired some of my previously sold PRIMARY ORIGINAL pieces and wanted something similar but not necessarily as expensive. They are similar to but in no way identical to the PRIMARY ORIGINALS after which they take their inspiration. They are also not merely a re-painting of my PRIMARY ORIGINALS because each one contains new artistic- discoveries. For instance, I am often inspired to rework or add characters, furnishings, colors etc. (in ways that never occurred in the PRIMARY ORIGINALS). I typically spent two to five weeks on each piece. I say spent because I am no longer creating works in this category. They sometimes (but not always) have unique frames which I embellished with one-of-a-kind mattes and vintage objects de' art and unusual titles. They are framed in many ways; (simplyornately, or were painted on gallery wrap canvas or on furniture; which requires no frame). All these pieces are ethically technically legally (and in every way) Original Paintings. I generally created around five to ten pieces of this category of work per year. This category of work began in approximately 2005 and ended in approximately late 2023.I have about five or ten unfinished pieces in this category (in storage) and may complete these works if I am so inspired in the future; if so, they will be dated the year they are completed. 3. REPLICA ORIGINALS These were typically the third most time consuming type of work (and third most expensive)and are owned by hundreds of people across the globe. They are are similar to my VERSIONS of WORK (see category 2. above) with some important exceptions. First of all, as mentioned above, I created more of them than of category 2. Secondly, they were as close to being identical to the PRIMARY ORIGINALS as possible. They had no new creative developments within them with the important exception of the frames which were often very unusual or elaborate and embellished with one-of-a-kind mattes and vintage objects de' art and unusual titles. They were painted on a variety of surfaces (wood, canvas, mirrors, small furniture and other materials). They were entirely hand-painted REPLICAS of some of my favorite PRIMARY ORIGINALS. These pieces generally required many days or even weeks to complete. They are legally and ethically also Original Paintings in their own right. I generally created between fifty to a couple or few hundred of these per year. I began this category of work inapproximately 2005 and in late 2023 I stopped creating this category. I do have about fortyunfinished pieces in this category (in storage) and may complete these works if I am so inspired in the future; if so, they will be dated the year they are completed. 4. SMALL GALLERY WRAP CANVAS REPLICA ORIGINALS This was a new category- (created in 2021). I created less than 60 of theseand will never create any more. For more on REPLICA ORIGINALS see category 3 above. Gallery wrap canvases are deeper than most canvases are so are designed to be painted on all four sides (the external edges of a canvas ordinarily covered by a frame) and are designed to be hung without frames in order for the viewer to appreciate the unique dimensional effect as the painting 'wraps around' on the sides. Although not traditionally framed, I provide properhanging apparatus on back. The artwork may also be displayed 'standing up' on a piece of furniture. 5. 2nd STYLE REPLICA ORIGINAL PAINTINGS (ENHANCED with PARTIAL HAND-PAINTING, ANTIQUE CUSTOM FRAMES, ETC.)New to the market near the beginning of 2023, this type of work is similar to my REPLICA ORIGINAL works but less expensive. Like my VERSIONS OF WORK, I've added new elements. In some, I was inspired to use parts of my own photographs and digitally 'collage' them into the scene to change the meaning from that of the PRIMARY ORIGINAL. For example, in my work entitled : Bob Dylan Studies the Big BIZ-NESS Show, The PRIMARY ORIGINAL leaves the specific big biz-ness inferred up to the viewer's imagination. In this new type of work I was inspired to add Fauci (and other contemporary symbols of Big Pharma). I spent a considerable amount of time revising the background to capture my current sentiment. There's a woman on stage who is in a magicians' box (being cut apart)- and I printed the words 'non-essential workers' on the side of her box. This new type of work is extremely enjoyable for me as it allows me endless opportunities to re-express myself (beyond the original inspiration for pieces which may have been created decades ago) Each piece is initially printed (using incredibly expensive state of the art equipment for maximum resolution, color, etc.) I've sourced a unique material to print the work which achieves maximum light-fastness and durability. The hand painting; (although partial), makes the pieces more affordable. Also due to my hand painting on each work in this category, the collector is purchasing an ORIGINAL work of art technically, legally, ethically and in every way. This has been established in courts of law. It is also why early on in my rock and roll icon art business I stopped creating pieces that were simply framed prints (even though some of my early collectors like Julia Roberts owns a few pieces of my framed prints. I wanted my collectors (after about the year 2000) to not be able to purchase framed prints, but more unique and valuable pieces. So, you may ask about the LAST category of work: why am I selling signed PRINTS again? I've been doing so for a little over a year to give people a lower priced option (since my work has appreciated) I will selling signed prints once my new category 5. of work is up and running. 6. SPECIALIZED PRINTS. THESE PRINTS WERE USUALLY FRAMED, SOMETIMES MOUNTED ON FOAM CORE BACKGROUNDS AND GENERALLY HAD MANY OBJECTS DE' ART ATTACHED TO THE PIECE USING GLUE AND OR WIRE. THE PRINTS WERE ALSO MOUNTED ON FURNITURE, TOYS, CIGAR BOXES, MIRRORS ETC.I began with very small framed prints at my first show in Nashville TN. in the early 1990's. From there I created many new sizes and shapes. I created and sold hundreds (possibly over one thousand of these framed works). The prints mounted on toys, furniture and other objects were more rare. I created about one hundred of them. Two were created on a working miniature organ, a few were created on top of large antique mirrors, a large batch (over one hundred) were created on cigar boxes, etc. These pieces were created only between the years 1993 and 2004. 7. SIGNED PRINTS KATA's prints are produced on extra heavy card stock paper with a gloss finish using the most expensive state of the art equipment. Each one is signed and dated. Available only in 2022-2023.Began again in late 2024- until?
