While other Maine Regiments were ordered to join the Army of the Potomac, the 21st was ordered to join the expeditionary force under Major General Banks being sent to open the Mississippi River from the south. This volume prepared by the 21st Maine Regimental Association in 1907 documents the wartime history of the Regiment (primarily the operations against Port Hudson and the Red River), detachments of individuals from the Regiment to other duties, accounts of 9 company reunions and 11 regimental reunions, biographical sketches of most members of the regiment, and photos (mostly wartime) of the officers and a few other key members of the regiment. Enhanced with 1 map and 60 photos of members (mostly officers) of the 21st Maine Volunteer Regiment.
