Description: This vintage real photo postcard features American actress, Billie Burke (1884-1970), famous for her roles on Broadway, Radio, and Silent and Sound films. She is best remembered as "Glinda", the good Witch of the North, in the musical film, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). Burke was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Merrily We Live" (1938). She was married to Broadway producer and Impresario, Florenz Ziegfeld from 1914 until his death in 1932. Burke was born in Washington DC. Her father was a singer and a clown. He worked for Barnum & Bailey Circus. As a child she toured the US and Europe with him. Her family settled in London, where she attended and enjoyed plays in the city's west end theatres. She began acting on stage in 1903 and made her London debut that same year. She continued performing in London and then returned to America to appear on Broadway. Between 1910 and 1913 she appeared in several plays. She met Ziegfeld and married him in 1914. Burke made her movie debut in 1915 in "Peggy". She was very successful; reportedly earning the highest salary of all actresses of her time. By 1917, she was a fan favorite. "Her girlish charm", her acting ability, and her fashionista style was admired by her audience. She was known for her beauty and her taste. Department stores carried the "Billie Burke Dress" with it's signature flat collar and lace trim. She became a commercial spokesperson for several products including "Pond's Vanishing Cream". Despite her success in films, she returned to the stage in 1919. In 1929, the Wall Street crash wiped out her family's investments and Burke returned to the Hollywood screen for a comeback. The film "Dinner at Eight" (1933) revitalized her career. Burke continued to act on stage and in film but added radio and television to her resume. The "Billie Burke Show" was on radio from 1943 through 1946. She had her own TV talk show from 1951 through 1952. She acted in plays through the late 1950's until she had problems remembering her lines. Her last screen appearance was in 1960.
