Winner of two Stalin Prizes of the second degree (1946, 1948) Born on January 2 (15), 1908 in the village of Molchany (now within the village of Zastadolye, Sennensky district, Vitebsk region of Belarus) into a Jewish family. In 1921-1922 he studied in the private studio of Yu. Peng. In 1925 he graduated from the Belarusian Art College (now Vitebsk Art School), studied with S. B. Yudovin and M. A. Kerzin. In 1925-1928 he studied at the VKHUTEIN in Leningrad with R. R. Bach, V. V. Lishev, M. G. Manizer, in 1928-1929 - at the Kiev Art Institute (now the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture) and the Tbilisi Academy arts from Ya. I. Nikoladze and E. E. Lansere. Since 1930, he continued his creative activity in Minsk. At the beginning of the war, he worked in Gomel as an illustrator of the newspaper poster “Let’s crush the fascist vermin”, and also collaborated in the front-line press. He worked at the Central Headquarters of the Partisan Movement in Moscow (1942-1944). After the liberation of Belarus, he returned to Minsk, where he worked as the chief artist of the Government House. Since 1980 - head of the creative workshop of the USSR Academy of Arts (sculpture department) in Minsk. Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1958; corresponding member 1947). Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1968 he was elected deputy chairman of the Belarusian Republican Peace Committee, and in 1969 he was awarded the medal of the Soviet Peace Foundation and the gold medal “Fighter for Peace”. In 1973, he was elected chairman of the Belarusian Republican Committee for Assistance to the Soviet Peace Fund. Member of the CPSU(b) since 1943. Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Belarusian SSR in 1947-1967 and from 1971 to 1986. Died on February 18, 1995 in Minsk. He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery.
