Description: Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly called elephant's foot palm or ponytail palm, is an evergreen perennial plant belonging to the asparagus family, Asparagaceae. Beaucarnea recurvata was once native to much of Mexico but is now critically endangered and limited to the area of Veracruz. B. recurvata grows up to 15 feet tall and has a large thick base at its trunk and tapers upward to a much thinner stem. Thin curved leaves protrude from the apex and are hair lock-shaped at the tips. Beaucarnea recurvata is grown as an ornamental crop for its unique structure and as a conservation attempt due to its declining natural population. Provide adequate watering during summer and keep dry during winter. Full sun or partial shade are ideal light conditions. USDA plant hardiness zone 9a-12b. Beaucarnea recurvata seeds should be pretreated with a light scarification from sandpaper or file. Scarification significantly reduces germination time as the seed coat is hard. Simply scratch the outer seed coat with the sandpaper or file to allow water to penetrate. After scarification, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours prior to planting. Surface sow seeds into a well draining potting mix and lightly cover with sand or potting mixture. Plant the seeds at least 1 inch apart from each other to prevent overcrowding. Keep sown seeds moist, but not soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures are between 60°F to 85°F. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
