Description: The Man from Greek and Roman by James Goldman Cover by Paul Bacon Book Club Edition Description: Hardback published by one of the Doubleday book clubs in 1974. Page 213 has a gutter code of 48Q, giving a printing date of the 48th week of 1974. The copyright for this book is 1974, so this would have come out soon after the first edition. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. James Goldman is best known as a playwright and screenwriter. From the front flap: Take Dr. Melvil West, a quiet scholar, forty-one, the Curator of Greek and Roman Art at the Metropolitan Museum; mix him thoroughly with Miss Caroline Gardener, twenty-seven, a girl from the right side of the tracks who has done everything once and most of it twice; combine them with the theft of a mysterious golden chalice worth $3,600,000 and you will begin to get the flavor of The Man from Greek and Roman. If your taste is for romance, you'll find a funny, fresh and moving story of two lonely lovers. For adventure fans, there are chases, escapes from the police of two continents, thieves, liars, desperate men, Corsican bandits and a shoot-out in the mountains. For those with intellectual leanings - a penetrating look inside the International Art world, discussions of aesthetics and extensive digging into archeology. And mystery buffs will find a twister that they can't unravel till the final pages. Romance, adventure, mystery and a lot of things to think about: The Man from Greek and Roman.
