Inside pages are pristine. Frances Wright describing those times and circumstances... At the outbreak of World War II, the teaching staff and graduate students of the Harvard College Observatory began to leave their positions one by one in order to contribute to the war effort. Bart Bok sought a way to contribute by saving life, rather than destroying it. Bok proposed to Harvard and the U.S. Army that he teach navigation. After his return from a visit to Camp Edwards, the proposal was put into effect. The Director of the Training Schools of the Engineer Amphibian Command, Colonel W.W. Dewitt, and his assistants, Lieutenant-Colonel Ben H. Nichols and Major W.E. Stevens, decided that a certain percentage of the officer trainees under their command would benefit from instruction in navigation. At that time in certain theatres of the war, landing craft were taken into the hulls of Navy vessels and launched from them. After invading enemy beaches, the small Army craft would have to return to the hulls of the Navy ships. If contact was missed for some reason, the soldiers had to fend for themselves, and so needed an ability to navigate. Frances W. Wright is an Honorary Associate of the Harvard College Observatory. She assisted Bok in teaching navigation to military personnel during World War II, and since then has taught navigation to Harvard undergraduates. She is co-author with Bok of Basic Marine Navigation, and author of Celestial Navigation and Coastwise Navigation. Read Bok's wikipedia entry to find out more about him and his contributions to astronomy. If you like this topic, I have some other Navy/maritime books listed for sale her on Ebay. The titles are...
