Description: Bald Head Island Sabal Palmetto has proven to be the most cold hardy Sabal palmetto. This is the farthest north naturally occurring Sabal palmetto on Bald head island, NC. A friend of mine and fellow palmtalk member was on the island for work a few years ago and picked a bunch of seed up off the ground that had fallen from the old palmettos. I was lucky enough to get 20 seeds from him and will start offering some to everyone. These are incredibly rare and nobody else has these for sale. I know people who have grown bald head palmettos from seed and their palmettos have survived temperatures as low as -5f degrees. These took major damage, completely defoliated and spear pulled, but did recover. Not saying these would be reliable in zone 6 for example and take those temperatures every winter, but definitely worth trying in zone 7. These are slow growers when young from seed, these are 2 year old seedlings well rooted in 1 gallon pots.
