His attributes in iconography include a drinking vessel, an ivy wreath, grape vines, and the thyrsos ( a long fennel stalk topped with ivy leaves). Although he is best known for the god of wine, he is also a vegetation deity, a god of liquid element, and the god of theatre. Herakles (also called Hercules) was the half brother to Dionysos; for although they had different mothers, they were both born from Zeus. He was known for his tremendous strength and courage as well as his mighty deeds. Hercules was both the most famous hero of ancient times and one of the most beloved. More stories were told about him than any other hero. Hercules was worshipped in many temples all over Greece and Rome.
